It is public information, checkable free of charge at any hour. The check runs on the vehicle registration number, the VIN or the policy number, for the current date or an earlier one. It returns the insurer, its contact details, the policy number and the details of the insured vehicle.

The National Police can run the check, including automatically — during traffic enforcement using photo or video, or when recording a traffic offence or an accident. Article 9 of the Law on MTPL states plainly that state bodies verify the existence of a policy against the MTSBU central database.

Only insurers licensed for this class and belonging to the Motor Bureau may sell these policies; that is where each contract is registered and given its unique number.
